Volunteers Are Needed

Our library has expanded so much in the past years, that many more volunteers are needed. There is something for everyone’s talents and skills. Please consider donating some of your time to help keep the library open and ready materials for patron use. Volunteers are needed to paste and file clippings in the Family Files, glean information from the Clay County Sheriff’s records of the 1800’s, type cards for the card catalog, go through old newspapers for genealogical information, do research from the queries received, download and answer e-mail, help patrons locate information when the library is open, ready materials for mailing, and enter genealogical information on the computer. Please stop by the library on Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday when the library is open or contact: The Library

Projects

Our Society is wholly made up of volunteers. Our main project is the ongoing one of collecting materials about Clay County Families and making these materials available to the public. We are presently engaged in a project to get all of the cemeteries organized by township and published. This will provide data on all tombstone inscriptions located at all of the cemeteries in Clay County. It will take some hard work; please keep an eye out for announcements concerning these forthcoming publications. As of this date, we do have Many of the Townships published and available for sale.

Youth in Genealogy

CCGSI is proud to once again sponsor a trophy and medals for the local 4-H Fair. The awards will go to 4-H ers with the best Genealogical projects in the competition at the County Fair.

CCGSI Website

Our ongoing project is the CCGSI web page. It is the combined effort of our volunteer members and is designed to make our resources available to the public via the internet. We are all new to the internet family and any comments, suggestions, or inquiries about our web page are welcome. We also accept requests now for Clay County research through e-mail. Drop us a line; we are always glad to hear from you!

Building Repairs

Our building in Centerpoint has had some much needed repairs done. The west flooring has been fixed, the front windows have been reinforced and sealed, and the front door has been fixed and sealed. The floor in the rear of the building has been reinforced from the basement with posts. Thanks to all those donating their time and talents in these matters.

Heating and Cooling System

Thanks to the generous donations of members a new heating and cooling system has been installed at the Library. The vast amount of irreplaceable materials at the Library will now have a much better environment for their preservation. We wish to thank the many people who donated their monies, time, and efforts for this much needed project.

Building Wiring

Most all of the electrical wiring has been upgraded in the building and new light fixtures and ceiling fans have been installed. Hopefully this will provide a more comfortable atmosphere for our patrons and members. We now have double the lighting in the Library and is very illuminating to us all.

Facelift

Our building has new windows in the front of the building. New window treatments are in order and will help to beautify our Library. We have rearranged the inside of the Library to best accommodate our visitors and make better use of our space. Many wonderful improvements have been made to the Library in the last couple of years. Visit us soon to see the improvements. Many thanks to all those who have donated their valuable time to assist in this change.

Carpeting

Our building is getting new carpeting now and hopefully the building will be in good shape for the Anniversary Party in July of 2005.

The 1884 Clay County History Book by Blanchard has been reprinted. The new books are for sale now on the "Items for Sale" page. The book is 30% larger than the original to help with reading the small print and is in hard back form. The pages are 8 1/2" x 11". Get yours now before they are all sold out. 100 copies were printed and half are already gone!

Research Fees-Due to the increasing costs of keeping our doors open it has been decided to raise the fees charged for research at the Library. Fees for research will now be $10.00 per hour for all inquiries. Official document fees have also been raised. The fees for official copies of birth, death, and marriage records from the court house has been raised to $10.00 for each copy. If only these records are requested the hourly research charge will be waived. You can check the research page or email the Library for more information.

Clay County Connections-Several years have passed since the Society has had a weekly newspaper column.  Now we do, and the first year anniversary of the "Clay County Connections," a column written for the The Brazil Times, will have passed before you read this; we do appreciate the efforts one of our volunteers has put into this column.  We are keeping the articles in a scrapbook for you out-of-town members to read when you visit the Library.
