About Our Library
The Clay County
Genealogical Society's Library is located in Center Point,
IN. We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from
1:00 to 4:00 PM. Other times can be arranged in advance. We can do
research for you. We have a vast amount of
resources available at the Library.
NEWS from the Library
NEW!
Recent Donation Was a Blessing
For some time the library has had more expenses than it has
generated income. For the past few years the officers have been
concerned about being able to keep the library open. The copy
machine (used for printing the Researchers and items for sale)
and the microform reader/printer (used by patrons) are very
expensive machines to maintain. Also, with the information that
can be found on the Internet, many people use it instead of
coming to the library or paying for information that our
volunteers locate for them when they cannot visit the library
themselves. There is a wealth of information on the Internet;
however, just because it is there does not mean that it is
accurate. It is best to check library records to insure the
accuracy of information obtained.
Thanks to a generous $5,000 donation by one of our life members,
we can continue to provide original source records from Indiana
and other states from which our Clay County ancestors
immigrated. It is important for present and future genealogists
to have access to our rows and rows of family histories, surname
files, military information, county histories, and all of the
other unique information housed at the Clay County Genealogy
Library. There are many irreplaceable, hard to locate sources in
our library; when you have the opportunity, stop by and ask one
of the volunteers to acquaint you with our special collections.
Hoosier Cheer For Our Heroes
Since September 11, 2001, more than 14,5000 National Guard
members from Indiana have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
They make sacrifices every day of the year for us; during the
holidays would be a good time for us to express our appreciation
by sending Christmas cards to them. If you wish to send
Christmas cards to Indiana servicemen and women who will be
spending the holidays overseas, cards are being collected at the
office of Lt. Gov. Becky SKILLMAN. Military officials advise it
is best to avoid glitter and confetti when sending cards. Also,
do not include candy, money or other holiday surprises in cards.
Send cards to: Office of Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman; c/o Hoosier

Family Maps of Clay County, Indiana
Family Maps of Clay County, Indiana, is now
available for purchase through the Clay County Genealogical
Society for $25 plus shipping and Indiana sales tax for Indiana
residents. It is fun and easy to use. The Surname/Township
Index allows you to determine which Township Map Group(s)
contain individuals by surname. Each Map Group has a
corresponding full-name index of all individuals who obtained
patents for land within its Congressional township’s borders.
After each index you will find the Patent Map to which it
refers, and just thereafter, you can view the township’s Road
Map and Historical Map, with the latter map displaying streams,
railroads, and more. There is a map showing all of the Indiana
counties, one with cities and towns of Clay County, and several
other interesting maps. Have you ever heard of the following
Clay County towns: Mechanicsburg, Roadman Corner, Wickville, or
Hirt Corner? You will find them in this book of maps. Cemeteries
are marked on the Road Map pages for each township. If you have
early Clay County ancestors, you will love this book.
