A Message From Our President A plea from the President, Betty HERBERT My year as President is swiftly coming to an end and before I pass the gavel to Alice Ann, I want to thank each of you, whether you held an office, were a “Key Holder” and opened the library on the afternoons of Mon., Wed. or Sat,. gathered material for the quarterly newsletter, typed and put it together or posted some of the material into the website, or “A Member”. To all of you I say “thanks”, because we would not be a “Society” without your support and I hope you will want to join again in 2011. I’ll take this opportunity to invite any of you to send your family histories to Pat, to put into future issues of, The Researcher or maybe a Family Group Sheet that you were able to complete after researching in the Library in Center Point, IN, that you would like to share with other “Clay Co. Cousins.” Send them to: The Library Please use Research in subject line. In our 30 year history we have only had 3 editors writing our Newsletter, Ann was the first, Mary and Pat:. Yes, I repeat “Thanks to all of you!” For whatever role, you were part of our “Society.” Looking back to those early 1980 years when the Library started in one room of Helen Tarvin’s home, on West National in Brazil. How many of you recall visiting the Library, in the beginning? Before we “spilled out” and took over her “Dinning Room Table” within 5 years. That is when she said, “We need to find a new home.” Ben Coffman came to our rescue and paid for the present building. Our history book sales and donations allowed the “Society” to pay him back quicker than thought possible. Helen and her daughter Ann and Lee sold their properties and moved away from Clay Co. In September of this year, Helen fell and broke her hip. She came through surgery with flying colors. Her health is good but she has very poor balance. So lets thank her by keeping her in our thoughts and prayers during the Holiday Season. Her 98th birthday will be Jan 12th , let us show our love for her. This past year we asked for monies to attach a roof to the rear of our Library building. We collected enough for that project. And we thank you for those donations. Perhaps one of the first expenses to be cut from your budget, in hard times, would be a hobby. And for some people, research is a hobby. Maybe this is the reason our “Society” has run in the red for the past 3 years. We really do need financial help. If you don’t have any spare cash, perhaps you could remember us with a gift in your will. As that is just what is keeping our doors open now, since the income is not keeping up with expenses. Please don’t forget to renew your memberships. Being part of a “Society” is very rewarding and you wouldn’t want to miss any issues of The Researcher. Remember: “THE HEART IS HAPPIEST WHEN IT BEATS FOR OTHERS.” MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! From the, Clay County Genealogical Society, Inc. Volunteers
