June 1918:

The many friends of J. F. DURKIN were welcoming him back into Brazil after being away for many years. Mr. DURKIN returned as a chiropractor and opened on office equipped with all the up-to-date outfit for his practice in the Charles H. KNIGHT Block. He lived here many years and at one time worked at the Times office.

Since the city of Brazil was not represented in the gas rate hearing before Commissioner F. B. JOHNSON, evidence showed the present rate is not sufficient, as the company is overcapitalized. JOHNSON pointed out that as the company had back debts, the consumers should not pay it, but the debt should be paid by the stockholders.

County auditor Wiley E. PARRISH today announced the apportionment of the township school funds for the first half of the year. The school enumeration for Clay County shows there to be a total of 9,563 school children which makes the per capita for the present distribution $2.47.

Harry B. SMITH. In related news, two Harmony boys will be returning home after several months of active military duty. Charles LEONHARDT and Thomas BAYOR both arrived home safely recently. May 1919:
The Clay County Board of Charities made its annual tour of inspection to the County Infirmary near Bowling Green and the Clay County Orphans’ Home at Knightsville, last Tuesday. Mrs. Prentiss TILLEY, the secretary will send the formal report to the State Board of Charities. The board found several of the previous recommendations for improvements at the County Infirmary carried out and steps taken to prevent water from getting into the basement of the new building which was bothersome for a few years after the new building was constructed.

A move is now on foot to affect a compromise in the matter of a route for the proposed improved highway north and south through Clay County. A large number of good roads boosters believe the logical route for the proposed highway is via Forest Ave. through the center tier of townships to Clay City and thence to the Brunswick Bridge….. It is believed if the road were to be ordered built over the Forest Avenue route instead of via Morgan’s Crossing, it would serve to satisfy the people in the Western part of the county who have a petition before the commissioner asking to brick road to run through the western tier of townships starting at a point west of Billtown. The commissioners will investigate each route before ordering the road built.
