read from for the “Items of Interest” for this quarter.

1909 Travis’ A History of
Clay County; if there are **, the material was taken from the
Clay County, Indiana
history that the
Historical Society published in 1984.
Material not marked with asterisks came from the Blanchard 1884 History

Thomas Blakely Coan: b. 25 October 1817 in Washington Co., PA;
farmer, is the third son of Peter and Hiley (AUSTIN) Coan, native of
Pennsylvania and New Jersey and of German and Irish extraction

BLAIR, Frederick b. 4
September 1855 in Owen Co., IN; was the third of five children born to
John and Mary (Myer) Blair, both natives of Germany.
A farmer & stock raiser married Melinda NEED.

of the first marriage ceremonies traceable in Cass Township performed by
Squire Samuel Rizley to Wesley

CRIST, Marvin B. born
24 March 1845 in Sullivan Co., IN; was the second child of Henry W. and
Lucinda (LISTON) Crist.
He came to Clay County with his parents in the spring of 1840.

March 1880 in Washington Twp., Clay County, and is the youngest son of
Elijah and Elizabeth (DEAL) Wright, natives respectively of South Carolina
and Pennsylvania. Pg. 514

second wife of Samuel HORN on
20 January 1867, by which union they had 5 children:
George Allison, William Nelson, Sarah A., an infant deceased, and
John Albert, deceased.
DUGGER, L. from pg. 107
of The Encyclopedic Directory of Clay County, Indiana, occupation,
miner; lived on 3 Street in Carbon; he was born in KY 1849 and came to
Carbon 1893.
ELLIOTT, Dorsey O. b. 4
August 1816 in Nicholas County, KY and is the 7th of 8 children
born to William and Sarah (TURNER)
Elliott, natives of Maryland and Kentucky respectively. EMRICK,
John from the 1880 Clay Co. Census is a farmer 28 years of age b. in
Indiana. Is a boarder living
in the household of Robert (37) and Mahala (32) HARPER
both from Ohio.

June 1896 to Cash and Mary MORGAN
HADLEY; worked in coal mines with his father, was a carpenter in
Indianapolis. In the 1920’s
he managed a grocery store in Brazil and in the 30’s worked at Arketex
Corp. Died 20 February 1977

Alfred Wiley b. 10 December 1845 in Tippecanoe County, IN s/o Alford and
Nancy Thornell Hayes. He
served in the Civil War; on his return he married Margaret Ann ADAMS
in 1866 and had several children. Pg.

both born in Wayne County, IN, 30 March 1825 and 29 February 1828 sons of
John and Nancy HENDRIX parents of 10 children.
They came to Clay County in 1845.
They were blacksmith and manufacturers of farm implements in
Brazil, Indiana. Pg. 357
HOFFMAN, Jacob b. in
Penn. 1804 s/o John and Barbara (HARPSTER)
Hoffman many stops before settling in Clay County, Dick Johnson, Township,
and taking as his wife on 6 Jan 1825 Mary (CROY).
This union blessed with 12 children; all of them named.

LAYBOLD of Terre Haute but at the time of this writing were living in FL
and their 3 daughters were in Florida, Texas, and Illinois. Pg. 291

Arthur (1881-1948) b. in Washington, Indiana, oldest s/o of ten children
of John and Anna Laura (HOBACK)
Loughmiller. Very interesting
article with a picture of Charles A. and his bride, Edna, on their wedding

MILLER, Andrew b. 3
December 1832 in Columbiana Co., Ohio, s/o Henry and Sarah (MYERS)
Miller. In 1870 he came to
Brazil and hoisted coal for the Ormsby Coal Company.

was on the charter member list from Mark’s Lodge No. 360 I.O.O.F., which
was instituted at Middlebury on 27 January 1871 Harrison Township.

In 1872 moved to Vigo Co. after a short time moved to Newburg, Clay

WALKER, Thomas b. in
Hardin Co., KY, 4 June 1815 and in 1822 came to Clay County with his
mother, uncle and grandfather entering land in Washington Twp.

in Bourbon County, KY, on 1 October 1849; the oldest of 11 children of
Josiah and Mary E. (RIKER)
Warner both natives of Kentucky and of German descent.
When he was 2 years of age his parents moved to Greencastle, In,
