I used the Clay County histories, of which we are blessed to have three, to read from for the “Items of Interest” for this quarter.  If there is an * before the surname, the information came from the 1909 Travis’ A History of Clay County; if there are **, the material was taken from the  Clay County, Indiana  history that the Historical Society published in 1984.  Material not marked with asterisks came from the Blanchard 1884 History of Clay County, Indiana, unless a note says something different.

   AUSTIN:  Thomas Blakely Coan: b. 25 October 1817 in Washington Co., PA; farmer, is the third son of Peter and Hiley (AUSTIN) Coan, native of Pennsylvania and New Jersey and of German and Irish extraction respectively.  Pg. 420

   BLAIR, Frederick b. 4 September 1855 in Owen Co., IN; was the third of five children born to John and Mary (Myer) Blair, both natives of Germany.  A farmer & stock raiser married Melinda NEED.  Pg. 417

   CHANCE, Nancy among one of the first marriage ceremonies traceable in Cass Township performed by Squire Samuel Rizley to Wesley Peyton. Pg. 311; as did Christopher Brannem and Tabitha CHANCE.

   CRIST, Marvin B. born 24 March 1845 in Sullivan Co., IN; was the second child of Henry W. and Lucinda (LISTON) Crist.  He came to Clay County with his parents in the spring of 1840.  Pg. 423

   ** (1984) CUMMINS, S.C. was listed among the pioneer families in the records of Fairview Christian Church in Dick Johnson Township.  Pg. 60

DEAL:  Amos H. WRIGHT, b. 26 March 1880 in Washington Twp., Clay County, and is the youngest son of Elijah and Elizabeth (DEAL) Wright, natives respectively of South Carolina and Pennsylvania.  Pg. 514

   DICKEY, Elizabeth (ROUSH) second wife of Samuel HORN on 20 January 1867, by which union they had 5 children:  George Allison, William Nelson, Sarah A., an infant deceased, and John Albert, deceased.

   DUGGER, L. from pg. 107 of The Encyclopedic Directory of Clay County, Indiana, occupation, miner; lived on 3 Street in Carbon; he was born in KY 1849 and came to Carbon 1893. 

   ELLIOTT, Dorsey O. b. 4 August 1816 in Nicholas County, KY and is the 7^th of 8 children born to William and Sarah (TURNER) Elliott, natives of Maryland and Kentucky respectively.

 EMRICK, John from the 1880 Clay Co. Census is a farmer 28 years of age b. in Indiana.  Is a boarder living in the household of Robert (37) and Mahala (32) HARPER both from Ohio.

   **FRYE, Barbara Kay married Larry D. ROESCHLEIN s/o Don H. and Elizabeth M. WILSON ROESCHLEIN.  Pg. 378

   **HADLEY, Willard b. 28 June 1896 to Cash and Mary MORGAN HADLEY; worked in coal mines with his father, was a carpenter in Indianapolis.  In the 1920’s he managed a grocery store in Brazil and in the 30’s worked at Arketex Corp.  Died 20 February 1977  Pg. 148

 **HAYES, Alfred Wiley b. 10 December 1845 in Tippecanoe County, IN s/o Alford and Nancy Thornell Hayes.  He served in the Civil War; on his return he married Margaret Ann ADAMS in 1866 and had several children.  Pg. 233

   HENDRIX, Eli and John both born in Wayne County, IN, 30 March 1825 and 29 February 1828 sons of John and Nancy HENDRIX parents of 10 children.  They came to Clay County in 1845.  They were blacksmith and manufacturers of farm implements in Brazil, Indiana.  Pg. 357

   HOFFMAN, Jacob b. in Penn. 1804 s/o John and Barbara (HARPSTER) Hoffman many stops before settling in Clay County, Dick Johnson, Township, and taking as his wife on 6 Jan 1825 Mary (CROY).  This union blessed with 12 children; all of them named.  Pg. 527

   JACKSON, Samuel b. 29 June 1812 s/o Thornton and Sophia (SHORT) JACKSON of Clermont County, Ohio, moving to Clay County autumn of 1836.  Married Mary HILON 28 May 1835, they had 9 children.  Pg. 493

   **KRIDER, D.D.S., Dee; name appeared among the long list of professional people on pg. 13 and again on pg. 38 as being a charter member of the Brazil Rotary club.

   **LAYBOLD, Lavine May d/o Howard and Zella (HUFFMAN) LOWDERMILK; married Dr. Ralph LAYBOLD of Terre Haute but at the time of this writing were living in FL and their 3 daughters were in Florida, Texas, and Illinois. Pg. 291

   **LOUGHMILLER, Charles Arthur (1881-1948) b. in Washington, Indiana, oldest s/o of ten children of John and Anna Laura (HOBACK) Loughmiller.  Very interesting article with a picture of Charles A. and his bride, Edna, on their wedding day 14 Oct 1903.  Pg. 293

   MILLER, Andrew b. 3 December 1832 in Columbiana Co., Ohio, s/o Henry and Sarah (MYERS) Miller.  In 1870 he came to Brazil and hoisted coal for the Ormsby Coal Company.  Married 6 Nov. 1853 to Caralina LINGENFELTER and 6 children bless this marriage.  Pg. 481

   **MONCE, Jr. h/o Paula Schopmeyer and father of Karrie and Amy.  Pg. 231

   MYERS, Elizabeth of German descent married to William LOWERY of Scotch descent lived in Bedford County, Penn., when their first son, Nicholas, was b. 29 May 1817.   Read about the life of Nicholas on page 507.

   O’NEAL, John was on the charter member list from Mark’s Lodge No. 360 I.O.O.F., which was instituted at Middlebury on 27 January 1871 Harrison Township.  Pg. 202

   *PEARCE, Bessie, a native of Ross, Herefordshire, England, married Volney SHATTUCK 16^th September 1869 {this is a very interesting sketch on the SHATTUCK family and on the CC Preservation Association included in their Cemetery Walk on 6 October 2001}.  Pg. 121

   PELL, Rebecca A. b. 27 May 1834 in Lewis Co., KY, coming to Van Buren Township with her parents in 1840.  Married Jacob THOMAS 13 December 1849  Pg. 389

   RECTOR. Charles P. b. 10 February 1840; youngest child of John and Catherine RECTOR; married 26  January 1865 to Annie REDIFER who was b. 29 August 1845 of parents Louis and Louise (GREGORY) REDIFER.  Pg. 499

   **REID, Ruth Magdalene 18 Feb. 1906 – 1 Mar 1980;  d/o Charles M. and Cora BEARD REID of Parke County.  Ruth was a registered nurse married to Herman C. KOEHLER; mother of two sons, Chris C. and Herman Carl Jr.  Pg. 276

   *REUBELT, Amanda d/o Deurick and Amanda WARNER natives of KY one of 10 children. Pg. 167

   **ROTH, Marilyn of Brookville, IN, married Ronald LASH who graduated from Brazil High School in 1966.  They are the parents  of two sons, Ryan and Adam.  Pg. 207

     SANDERS, Samuel H. b. 9 March 1824 at Lockport, IN; s/o Joseph and Eda (BROCK) Sanders; his parents came to Lewis Twp., Clay County, 1832.  He married Hannah d/o Jesse and Susanna NEAL.  Pg. 546  

   SHORT, E.G. born in Clermont County, Ohio, 10 October 1849.  His parents moved to Jefferson Co., IN, in 1857.  In 1872 moved to Vigo Co. after a short time moved to Newburg, Clay Co., IN, where he became a bookkeeper for the P. Ehrlich and Co., Mining Company.  Pg. 457

   WALKER, Thomas b. in Hardin Co., KY, 4 June 1815 and in 1822 came to Clay County with his mother, uncle and grandfather entering land in Washington Twp.  Pg. 414  

   WARNER, William I. born in Bourbon County, KY, on 1 October 1849; the oldest of 11 children of Josiah and Mary E. (RIKER) Warner both natives of Kentucky and of German descent.  When he was 2 years of age his parents moved to Greencastle, In, where they remained for 20 years.  Pg. 441
